As a conservation biologist, Dave strives to provide decision makers with scientific findings from an unbiased viewpoint. In 1998, he founded Biodiversity Research Institute, whose mission is to further progressive wildlife research and conservation in the science-policy fields. ​

Managing Editor 

Involved in loon conservation since 1995, Kate has co-authored a series of books about the wildlife that BRI scientists study. Her experience in science communications and expertise in operations management are a vital asset to Big Dipper Books.

Deborah McKew
Editor-in-Chief

Since 2011, Deb has written, edited, and produced a wide variety of scientific communications publications for BRI’s growing research programs. She brings her expertise as science journalist, editor, desktop publisher, and marketing communications specialist to this new venture.

Design and Production

Linda is the principal at RavenMark graphic design firm and has had a long history working with BRI. Her client base is grounded in environmental and nonprofit organizations, known for their attention to detail and bringing creativity to each project.​​

Digital Illustrator

Artist turned scientist, Iain is co-director of BRI’s Center

for Waterbird Studies. Reinvigorating his early training as a graphic designer, he is now a valuable resource as a digital illustrator and shares that expertise with Big Dipper Books.

Artist/Illustrator

Scientist turned artist, Shearon paints wildlife scenes for BRI publications. Life in the Northwoods of Maine has given her a unique view of nature’s intimate moments. Her painting style, meticulous attention to detail, and accuracy help captivate a general audience.
