The name Big Dipper Books was born from the quiet, contemplative hours of fieldwork—those late nights under open skies where science and intuition meet. For more than 30 years, wildlife biologist David Evers spent countless nights studying loons across northern lakes, collecting data under stars that became as familiar as old friends. During those solitary hours, the Big Dipper constellation was more than a celestial fixture; it was a steady companion charting a path towards the guiding North Star.

Along with fellow loon biologist, Kate Taylor, his longtime partner in the field and in life, the pair started Big Dipper Books. The publishing company reflects the values of their conservation ethos: deep reverence for wildlife, meticulous observation, and a belief that science should be conveyed in a meaningful way. Coupling the unique lens of field biologists and wildlife artists, the complexities of the natural world can be documented as an act of celebration.

As part of their mission, Biodiversity Research Institute is dedicated to advancing environmental awareness and informing decision makers about their research.
Art and photography provide a way to explore and explain complex scientific
concepts, as well as to engage the general public in conservation.
